چکیده

The genetic basis of vegetative incompatibility in the cellular slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum, is elucidated. Vegetatively compatible haploid strains from parasexual diploids at a frequency of between 10(-6) and 10(-5), whereas "escaped" diploids are formed between vegetatively incompatible strains at a frequency of approximately 10(-8). There is probably only a single vegetative incompatibility site, which appears to be located at, or closely linked to, the mating-type locus. The nature of the vegetative incompatibility is deduced from parasexual diploid formation between wild isolates and tester strains of each mating type, examination of the frequency of formation of "escaped" diploids formed between vegetatively incompatible strains, and examination of the mating type and vegetative incompatibility of haploid segregants obtained from "escaped" diploids.

A genetic map of Dictyostelium discoideum based on mitotic recombination.

A genetic map of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum is presented in which 42 loci are ordered on five of the seven linkage groups. Although most of the loci were ordered using standing mitotic crossing-over techniques in which recessive selective markers were employed, use was also made of unselected recombined haploid strains. Consistent with cytological studies in which the chro...

Evidence for a second chemotactic system in the cellular slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum.

An unknown substance found in bacteria (Escherichia coli) is especially effective in attracting the vegetative amoebae of the cellular slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum. However, the aggregating amoebae are not attracted to it at all. On the other hand, the vegetative amoebae show very little chemotactic response to cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP), whereas the aggregating amoebae...

Choice of partners: sexual cell interactions in Dictyostelium discoideum.

Recognition of mating partners is of central importance in the sexual processes. In consideration that the most important function of sexuality is to shuffle genetic materials to generate wider variation of characters, mating among different genetic backgrounds is preferable. Wild isolates of cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum are predominantly heterothallic, but homothallic ones also...

Genetic Diversity in Cellular Slime Molds: Allozyme Electrophoresis and a Monoclonal Antibody Reveal Cryptic Species among Dictyostelium discoideum Strains.

Cellular slime molds have been classified on the basis of a small number of descriptive criteria such as fruiting body color and morphology, and, in heterothallic species, by assignment to compatible mating groups. However, some isolates which are morphologically classified as conspecific do not fall into a simple mating-type classification; for example some are asexual or homothallic. An incre...

Dictyostelium discoideum

Dictyostelium discoideum is a cellular slime mold [4] that serves as an important model organism [5] in a variety of fields. Cellular slime molds have an unusual life cycle. They exist as separate amoebae, but after consuming all the bacteria in their area they proceed to stream together to form a multicellular organism. These features make them a valuable tool for studying developmental proces...
